What are LED Lights?

led1An LED light produces light without using a filament and without using pressurized gas. It utilizes a semiconductor material. LEDs first became available in the 1960s, but have advanced significantly since then. When they initially came onto the market, they were only able to produce one color of light. As advances in technology allowed, they soon came available in forms that can produce many different colors of light – including very bright white light – and were made more efficient and longer lasting. Today, they present one of the best opportunities to improve the quality of lighting, the longevity of lighting devices and the environmental impact on the earth due to some of the toxic materials that are present in other forms of lighting.

LED lights are very compact and, with the addition of reflectors and other hardware, they can produce a very bright light. LED lights are also notable for being able to perform very well at low voltages. This is one of the reasons that they have become so popular for household lighting. Because they consume a lower amount of power to produce the same light that an incandescent bulb would require a great deal of power to produce, LEDs allow people to save money and, because they are long-lasting, to save on waste.

LED lights are utilized in such a huge range of applications that it’s nearly impossible to look anywhere on a modern desk without seeing at least one. They provide indicator lights, such as showing when an electronic device is on or off, when a remote control button is being depressed and so forth. They also provide illumination. Many desk lamps, and a great many flashlights, are now produced using LEDs, which offer a cooler, more efficient form of lighting.

LED lights also, because they do consume so little power, are ideally suited for battery-powered applications. They can function for a great deal of time on the same amount of battery power that an incandescent light would consume very quickly. This is why modern flashlights oftentimes have much longer operating times than do older flashlights, which draw a great deal of power from the battery and typically do not last very long at all.
